With Andor Season 2 just weeks away, series creator Tony Gilroy is hoping the show's success paves the way for bolder genre storytelling in Star Wars—including a potential horror film or sitcom.

In an exclusive interview with SFX Magazine, Gilroy reflected on the franchise’s traditional reluctance to experiment with genre, unlike its Marvel counterpart. However, he believes Andor and Skeleton Crew are proof that Star Wars can embrace new storytelling styles.
"I think we've made our lane with Andor, and Skeleton Crew was trying to do their own, too," Gilroy said. "The hope is that you can do anything, and we're going to open up some canonical things and concepts in Andor that maybe will get people excited to do other things."
Gilroy revealed that when Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy first approached him, his immediate question was: "Could you do a courtroom drama?" He added, "I always fantasized that the show would break new ground, that someone would be able to make a three-camera sitcom in Star Wars or a horror movie."
While Star Wars has traditionally leaned into action-adventure and space opera, Gilroy’s vision suggests that future projects could take the franchise in radically new directions. With Andor proving Star Wars can tackle complex, mature narratives, the door may be open for even more experimentation in the galaxy far, far away.
Andor Season 2 premieres on April 22 on Disney+.
