Boyega on Star Wars: ‘Luke Wouldn’t Be Disappearing on a Rock’

At Florida Supercon 2025, John Boyega—best known to Star Wars fans as Finn in the sequel trilogy—offered a candid look at how he would have reshaped the saga if he had held creative power from the beginning. Speaking to fans, Boyega made it clear that his version of the sequels would have diverged significantly from what audiences saw on screen.

The actor’s first priority, he explained, would have been preserving and properly completing the arcs of the original heroes. Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia would not have been written out so abruptly. Instead, Boyega envisioned a respectful “passing of the baton” moment, one that honored their legacies before fully shifting focus to the new generation. He stressed that these icons deserved more than sudden deaths or diminished roles, suggesting that Luke, in particular, would not have been relegated to isolation on Ahch-To or reduced to an astral projection in the climactic battles.

Boyega also emphasized that the new characters would have been developed with more difficulty and depth. Rather than instantly mastering abilities or wielding power without explanation, they would have struggled as past characters had—earning their skills through trial, error, and growth. This approach, he implied, would have made the younger heroes’ journeys more grounded and relatable.

Looking beyond character arcs, Boyega said his vision would have tapped into deeper corners of Star Wars lore. He pointed to the Old Republic era and the fan-favorite Force Unleashed video game series as sources of inspiration. These stories, he argued, could have expanded the universe in ways that felt fresh while still respecting the established mythology. For Boyega, the key was balance: pushing the saga into new territory without losing sight of its roots.

Ultimately, Boyega’s comments reflected a desire to create sequels that both celebrated the franchise’s legacy and broadened its scope. His vision suggests a trilogy where the original heroes receive a proper sendoff, the new generation earns its place through struggle, and the Star Wars mythos grows responsibly through careful integration of beloved lore.
