Acclaimed filmmaker James Mangold has shared new details about his upcoming Star Wars movie, unofficially titled Dawn of the Jedi. The film will explore an uncharted era of the Star Wars timeline, set a staggering 25,000 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. This bold departure from the Skywalker Saga promises to take audiences to the very origins of the Force and its first users.

In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Mangold emphasized his desire to craft a story unburdened by established lore. “The Star Wars movie would be taking place 25,000 years before any known Star Wars movies take place,” he explained. “I’ve always wanted to explore this area, inspired by my teenage fascination with the franchise. I’m not interested in being handcuffed by so much lore that it’s immovable.”
Mangold is collaborating with Beau Willimon, known for his work on Andor, to develop a script that brings fresh perspectives to the beloved galaxy. The duo aims to create a narrative that embodies the franchise's emotional core while offering something entirely original.
By tapping into the freedom of this untapped timeline, Mangold hopes to recapture the pioneering spirit of George Lucas’ original vision. Whether Dawn of the Jedi will move into production remains uncertain, but Mangold’s enthusiasm is already sparking excitement among fans eager to explore the ancient mysteries of the Star Wars universe.
