Kathleen Kennedy to Step Down as Lucasfilm President—But She’s Not Leaving Star Wars

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm since 2012, is reportedly planning to step down at the end of 2025 when her current contract expires. A source familiar with her plans claims Kennedy intends to retire, though another source close to her has dismissed the report as “pure speculation.”

Kennedy took the helm of Lucasfilm following Disney’s $4 billion acquisition of the company, overseeing the relaunch of Star Wars with the sequel trilogy, starting with 2015’s The Force Awakens. That film became the highest-grossing domestic release of all time, earning $936 million in North America and $2 billion globally. However, subsequent films saw diminishing returns, with The Rise of Skywalker grossing half as much as The Force Awakens. The financial disappointment of 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story also cast a shadow over the franchise’s theatrical future.

Beyond film, Kennedy spearheaded Star Wars’ transition to streaming, launching hit Disney+ series like The Mandalorian and Andor. She also oversaw 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which ultimately lost an estimated $140 million.

However, according to industry insider Jeff Sneider, Kennedy’s exit from the presidency doesn’t mean she’s leaving Lucasfilm entirely. Sneider reports that she will serve as a producer on Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie and Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars trilogy. With a full trilogy in development under her watch, Kennedy is expected to remain a key figure in Star Wars for years to come.

While her leadership role may be changing, her influence on the franchise appears far from over.
