Ryan Reynolds Pitches an R-Rated Star Wars Project

Ryan Reynolds is no stranger to bold ideas—and his latest might be his riskiest yet. On a recent episode of The Box Office podcast, the Deadpool & Wolverine star revealed he pitched an R-rated Star Wars property to Disney. But don’t expect to see him wielding a lightsaber.

“I pitched to Disney, I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated Star Wars property?’” Reynolds shared. “It doesn’t have to be overt, A+ characters. There’s a wide range of characters you could use.” He emphasized that he wasn’t pushing for vulgarity—he wants to use an R-rating “as a Trojan horse for emotion.”

Reynolds made it clear he has no desire to star in such a project. “That would be a bad fit,” he said. Instead, he hopes to produce or write behind the scenes. “Those kinds of IP subsist really well on scarcity and surprise,” he added. “We don’t get scarcity with Star Wars anymore because of Disney+, but you can certainly still surprise people.”

While Andor pushed boundaries on Disney+, Star Wars has never officially crossed into R-rated territory. But if anyone can convince the House of Mouse to roll the dice, it might be the man who turned a foul-mouthed antihero into a billion-dollar franchise.

For now, Reynolds is busy writing Paramount’s upcoming Boy Band comedy, but his idea has sparked fresh speculation: could the galaxy far, far away get a little darker—and a little deeper?
