Sam Witwer is once again stepping into the shadows as Darth Maul. In a new interview with Collider, the voice behind the fan-favorite Sith teased story and style details about the upcoming animated series Maul: Shadow Lord—set one year after the fall of the Republic.

“This is after The Clone Wars,” Witwer confirmed. “Maul’s criminal empire has collapsed. His allies are scattered. The world he thought he could control has changed overnight.” While Maul had some knowledge of Sidious’s plans, he never expected this version of the Empire—cold, calculated, and soulless.
The series will take on a darker tone both visually and thematically. “If Maul is the POV character, the galaxy has to reflect his paranoia, his rage,” Witwer explained. “It’s dangerous, it’s shadowy, and it feels like something is always watching.”
Witwer also hinted that Shadow Lord won’t just be about Maul’s survival—it’s about legacy. “How does he train an apprentice? What values does he pass on in a galaxy where power is everything and honor means nothing?”
Comparing Maul to a forgotten warrior from an age of mysticism, Witwer emphasized the tension between old and new. “He’s a classically trained Force user watching the world turn to steel and bureaucracy. And he’s not okay with that.”
While no trailer has dropped yet, it’s clear this isn’t just fan service. Maul: Shadow Lord promises to deepen the character’s arc in unexpected, haunting ways.
