Simon Kinberg, best known in the galaxy far, far away for his contributions to Star Wars Rebels, has revealed that Andor is playing a key role in shaping the live-action Star Wars trilogy he is currently developing.

In a recent conversation with Nerdtropolis, the veteran writer and producer praised Tony Gilroy’s acclaimed series, describing it as one of the high points of science fiction storytelling in any franchise. “I was super inspired and just sort of awestruck by what Tony Gilroy did with Andor,” Kinberg said. “I thought that was about as good of science fiction storytelling as you can do in any franchise.” The series’ layered character work and grounded political intrigue, he explained, reaffirmed his commitment to crafting stories worthy of the Star Wars name.
Kinberg added that working within the saga remains a surreal honor, one that continues to inspire his enthusiasm. “It’s not even a dream come true — I couldn’t have dreamed it,” he said. “Just to be told there’d be more movies would have been unbelievable. To be allowed on the set of any of them was already a dream. My enthusiasm only grows with working on and around it.”
His Hollywood career has been marked by both triumphs and setbacks. On the Marvel side, Kinberg wrote the acclaimed X-Men: Days of Future Past while also shouldering less successful projects like Fant4stic and Dark Phoenix. As a producer, however, he has been integral to celebrated films including Logan, The Martian, and the first two Deadpool movies.
When it comes to Star Wars, Kinberg’s track record has leaned consistently positive. Beyond his pivotal work on Rebels, he was an early creative voice in helping Lucasfilm restart its cinematic slate, contributing treatments for The Force Awakens and earning “Special Thanks” credits on both that film and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Though Kinberg’s trilogy is still in development and currently without release dates, his admiration for Andor signals a focus on sophisticated, character-driven storytelling. If his vision follows through, fans may see echoes of Gilroy’s grounded approach ripple into a new era of cinematic Star Wars.
