Tony Gilroy Shares Thoughts on Skeleton Crew and Dawn of the Jedi

In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Andor creator Tony Gilroy offered his perspective on several current and upcoming Star Wars projects, including Skeleton Crew and the much-anticipated Dawn of the Jedi film.

Gilroy praised Skeleton Crew, the Jon Watts-led series that follows a group of children lost in the galaxy, calling it “really, really cool” and commending its commitment to tone and craftsmanship. “It seems really well done,” he noted, expressing appreciation for the show’s distinctive creative approach.

When asked about Rogue One, the film that launched his involvement in the Star Wars universe, Gilroy revealed he still hasn’t revisited it since its release. “I’ll probably watch Rogue One this weekend, tiptoe through it and just see how it feels,” he said. “I’ve been very leery of doing that. I don’t know why, everybody else has done it.” The remark suggests a degree of creative distance from the 2016 film, which has since become a fan favorite and a critical success.

Gilroy also briefly commented on Dawn of the Jedi, the upcoming film from director James Mangold that is set thousands of years before the events of the Skywalker Saga. “They’re going way back,” he said. “That’s kind of interesting, because it’s free.” His words hint at the creative freedom afforded by telling a story outside the constraints of established continuity—something Gilroy clearly finds compelling.

While not involved in either project, Gilroy’s comments reflect a deep respect for the variety of tones and timelines now being explored in the franchise. As Star Wars expands both forward and backward in its timeline, Gilroy’s endorsement adds thoughtful insight from one of its most respected storytellers.
