Bryce Dallas Howard Explains Why She Keeps Returning to Star Wars

Bryce Dallas Howard has quietly become one of the defining creative voices in Star Wars television. When she first stepped behind the camera for The Mandalorian in 2019, few expected the actress-turned-director to make such an impact. That episode—her first ever directing work for television—won fans over with its heart and balance of action and intimacy. Six years later, Howard has become a mainstay of the galaxy far, far away, helming episodes across The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Skeleton Crew, and now Ahsoka Season 2.

Speaking with People magazine, Howard shared why she keeps returning to Lucasfilm’s sandbox. “I love it so, so, so much,” she said. “I yearn to stay on this path of being able to be in that world, and grow, and learn, and challenge myself.” But for her, the pull of Star Wars goes beyond nostalgia. “You have to look at the reasons why. Is it because it brings you back to your childhood? Is it because you think that’s how to make a lot of money? Or is it because you’re connected to the audience and want to deliver an experience? What’s the motivation?”
That sense of purpose extends to how Lucasfilm approaches every production. Despite blockbuster budgets, Howard says the teams operate with an indie filmmaker’s mindset. “They’re very efficient in terms of resources. You want every dollar to be onscreen. The limitations often give birth to the greatest ideas.”
Now, with Ahsoka’s second season on the horizon, Howard promises fans something truly special. “Y’all, it’s so good,” she gushed. “It’s beautiful, thrilling, adventurous, romantic—everything you want from an epic story.”
Having already directed seven episodes across four series, Howard has become one of Star Wars’ most trusted storytellers—a creative bridge between generations of filmmakers. With Ahsoka Season 2 arriving next year, her enthusiasm suggests that the Force remains strong, not just on-screen, but behind the camera as well.
