Drew Struzan, the legendary illustrator behind some of the most iconic movie posters in film history, has passed away at the age of 78. Known for his distinctive hand-painted style that defined an era of cinematic art, Struzan’s work graced the posters of Star Wars, Back to the Future, E.T., Blade Runner, and Indiana Jones, among many others.

Struzan’s relationship with Star Wars began in 1978 with the re-release of A New Hope and spanned decades, including all three prequel trilogy posters. In 2015, he briefly emerged from retirement to create a special poster for The Force Awakens, once again capturing the saga’s timeless blend of myth and adventure.
His brother, Greg Struzan, confirmed the artist’s passing on Instagram, writing:
“It is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that Drew Struzan has moved on from this world as of yesterday, October 13th. He felt such joy knowing how much you appreciated his art.”
Lucasfilm released statements from both President Kathleen Kennedy and Star Wars creator George Lucas honoring the artist’s profound legacy.
“Drew’s unforgettable artwork touched so many hearts,” said Kennedy. “His paintings elevated the movie-going experience before audiences even stepped foot into a theater.”Lucas added, “His illustrations captured the excitement, tone, and spirit of my films. I was lucky to have worked with him time and time again.”
Struzan’s work inspired generations of artists and filmmakers. Steven Spielberg once called him “my favorite movie artist,” saying, “I had to almost live up to the art we later asked Drew to create.”
Struzan, who had been diagnose
d with Alzheimer’s several years ago, is survived by his wife, Dylan, and his son, Christian. His art will forever remain part of the cinematic imagination — vibrant, timeless, and larger than life.
