Rise of The Schwartz

After nearly four decades, Spaceballs is returning to theaters with a long-awaited sequel titled The Schwartz Awakens, set for release in 2027. Mel Brooks, the legendary actor, writer, and producer behind the original 1987 sci-fi parody, confirmed the news in a video announcement released on June 12, 2025.

In typical Brooks fashion, the announcement was delivered with tongue-in-cheek humor: “After 40 years, we asked ‘what do the fans want?’ But instead, we’re making this movie.” While The Schwartz Awakens is not the exact sequel title teased in the original (Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money), it’s clearly a continuation of the franchise’s satirical spirit, with the title poking fun at Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Brooks, who turns 99 on June 28, 2025, will reprise his role as “Yogurt,” the wise-cracking, merchandising-obsessed parody of Yoda. No other casting details have been announced yet, and it’s unclear whether original cast members like Rick Moranis or Bill Pullman will return.

The original Spaceballs spoofed George Lucas’s Star Wars saga with characters like Dark Helmet and Lone Starr, and featured a plot centered on stealing air from the Planet Druidia. Though it was only a modest box office hit, earning over $38 million worldwide, it gained cult classic status over the years thanks to its irreverent humor and endless quotability.

Fans have long speculated about a sequel, especially after the original film jokingly teased one. Now, with Brooks back at the helm, The Schwartz Awakens promises to bring a fresh dose of absurdity and nostalgia to a galaxy not so far, far away.
